But you should be outraged. Let's get a couple things straight: that place can be rough on a person but when they leave, living in the real world is pretty much a walk in the park. People who work in Gold normally learn skills that translate well in the outside world and don't have difficulties getting good jobs. And an 8 hour work day seems like a lunch hour. At first people don't know what to do with all that free time. Plus, they discover they don't have to eat granola or chicken 7 days a week and they rediscover food, so it's pretty usual to put on a few pounds. The part that is not cool is the thought of having wasted years for no reason. That's a big reason why people are now working to reform the place. Didn't mean to scare you, ksw1fan. Call her and find out how she's doing. (You may have to be persistent but if you keep upping the ante on the receptionist you'll get through.) Joe

In the Fall of '90 my wife and I were living in an apartment at Devonshire. We were among the few lucky ones who had a car and drove to and from the Base. A month or more before we left there was an issue put out that no one was to stop anywhere between the Base and the apartments. I knew this was the beginning of the end. When I made my plan to blow I knew I had to sneak out of the apartment very early in the morning. I was worried about this because I was sharing the apartment with Wendell and Diane Reynolds and he was the CO Gold at the time. My wife had already blown, so I was worried someone was watching me. I made it out of the apartment undetected about 4 am and walked to a Ryder truck rental place in Hemet. By some miracle I had gotten a Discover card so was able to rent the truck. There is more to the story, if anyone is interested.

Wait until you read Marc Headley\'s book

ksw1fan; Sorry to hear your daughter is there. When you read Marc Headley's book coming out soon you are going to be outraged that she is still there. Outraged. What he writes is accurate. My own prediction is that parents who read that book will not allow their kids to join the SO anywhere and that if someone is considering joining the SO that they will reconsider in a hurry once they open the book. You could enjoy it as a Felliniesque romp if it weren't true. One chapter made me want to cry knowing that I was at the base at the time the events described were going on and I didn't have a clue.
She is 24 now and is in since she was 16. She was at Flag the first year and than she said to me that she is happy to go to Int and leave all the PTS Public in Flag. My guesstimate is that she wants to stay "in". She`s not talking to me since 3 months, but she was on the [censored]one with her Wog-Grandmom.

Today, all the staff live "at the base" which means security is even tighter. There is no way anyone can "easily" get away at night, nor at any time, since most staff are not allowed to leave the base as crazy as that sounds. It takes huge courage to get up the nerve to originate you want to leave, and even then the individual faces months and months of "handling" in the form of security checks, conditions, etc. One REALLY has to be determined to leave. I got out before everyone was moved to the base, but I felt the walls closing in. Strangely, some people still want to "be there" (like my ex-wife at the time I left) and so I don't know what side of that ledger your daughter is on.

This is like reading a Steven King novel. This is completely insane. This is one very sick individual. Guns, razor wired fences? WTF? I truly don't know how anyone stayed sane. I don't get why the FBI wasn't called in I really don't. The people that were there were I am sure from homes where family cared about them this just blows my mind. What did everyone think this was some kind of test or what>
