Of all the articles I’ve ever written, this one might go down in history as the one most damaging to David Miscavige.

How is it, that despite the fact that Scientologists “have the tech on the suppressive person” everyone, and I mean everyone, missed David Miscavige for so long, the most flagrant SP in the history of Scientology, a classic SP in every sense?

The great liability of knowing you "have the tech" is assuming it is complete when it isn’t. And for the Church it was a fatal flaw.

There is an incredible HCO PL in OEC Vol 0. Few Scientologists know about it, but it is called TECH. It’s purpose is not to provide background theory, but effective tools you were intended to apply.

As LRH explains, any tech has its product. But the only way to know if a particular technology is correct is by looking at the product. If the end result is confusion he says, then you have incorrect or incomplete tech. Incorrect tech would include false data.

Now consider the PTS/SP tech. The state of the Church, tells us something important. DM even pushes people to study the PTS/SP tech. But still they don’t spot him.

So the question arises, if LRH’s PTS/SP tech was complete wouldn’t the Charlatan of the Board, David Miscavige, have been detected earlier?

Thankfully a brilliant individual — has filled in some missing blanks and brought to a finer point the vital work that LRH pioneered on the detection of the SP. She wrote a book. I’m slightly frustrated to say it was published in 2005 — frustrated, because I wish I read it years ago.

How important is this book? If we could all read only one book in our lives, this one would get my vote. It ought to be read to first graders and re-read every year until a person is 100 years old. I think more than any other book I’ve read, it could do more to help people deal with the real problems of life than any other. I will explain why in a moment.

But first, let me say this book will empower you against the true sources of friction and betrayal that confront us. LRH said it was 2.5% of the population. She, in many ways, defines the SP even more accurately than LRH did and her studies indicate that their percentage in the population varies by culture. In the US and western Europe the actual number is at 4% (and rising). In China and Japan the count is much lower — ranging from 0.03% to 0.14%.

But what is so amazing is her definition of the sociopath, and her breakthrough on how to detect them.

One further nail in the coffin for the Church is who wrote this book. A psychologist; a psychologist who is indeed worthy of the name. She has done what probably no one else could do — journeyed into the heart of darkness and returned with the holy grail. For when one considers the bumps in the road of life, those bumps are not caused by the sane 96%. These sociopaths are inevitably the source of disasters and catastrophes in life.

The book is called The Sociopath Next Door and its author is Martha Stout. (Kindle version)

You will laugh to see what she says about the suppressive person because what she says syncs so well with what LRH discovered. But she doesn’t just repeat his observations. She goes further and in a way, deeper. You will blow charge and major shifts will occur in your world. LRH stated it is therapeutic to get educated on the subject of SPs — it nullifies their destructive influence to a great extent.

Now, she doesn’t know everything LRH discovered. Her book does not replace what LRH wrote. The two bodies of work complete each other like two halves of a jigsaw puzzle.

Having read her book it is easy to see in LRH’s writings when he had encountered the sociopath or “suppressive person” because he starts to describe the personality several times. You see bits and pieces showing up here and there early on.

LRH described some traits of the sociopath when talking about people in the tone level of covert hostility. And certainly a sociopath can be 1.1. But his victims can also be in that tone band. Tone level is not a dependable indicator.

When you read her description, you are going to laugh also because everything she says is so perfectly a description of David Miscavige, from cradle to present time, along with other sociopaths you have known. They aren’t all driven to be movers and shakers, but some are. She explores all their various types and really gives you a FULL education on the subject so you can detect and get them out of your life.

Confusion

Scientology alone does not give the clearest picture of the sociopathic, antisocial or suppressive personality. LRH basically discovered there were indeed two distinct personality types. But then he and others engaged in labeling people as “antisocial personalities” if they violated certain justice codes. What that did (theoretically, anyway) is create a vast number of new criteria for determining who and what constitutes an “antisocial personality.”

For example, did you know that at one point LRH wrote in an HCOPL anyone who blows from course should be declared an SP? In other words, there are the 12 characteristics of an antisocial personality plus 12 characteristics of a social personality which together was at one time, “The Test.” Then later, there came a list of high crimes which apparently if you violated them, rendered the test irrelevant.

I found myself blown from a course once in about 1981. The Tech Sec, Austin Day Org, Vicky White, simply called me up and asked me what my MU was and like a neon light the word “that” appeared in front of me. After I cleared up the definitions, I wanted to go right back on course and I did. Well, per that Policy Letter, I could have been declared instead.

Calling someone a squirrel or an antisocial personality when they are not is a falsehood and possibly a control method that produced CONFUSION and opened the door to the present disaster. That's a theory.

LRH made a monumental discovery — there were two types of personalities — as different as night and day. And then he failed to stick by his own definitions, a huge mistake.

The problem with an unclear definition is that it can then be abused — and it has been. How stupid is it to let an SP inside the church drive all the good people out, and then as each one goes, he or she is labeled an “SP” by the actual SP who is driving them out?

Even if a person commited one of Scientonlogy's "High Crimes" (which is really a moral code, not "ethics"), that only proves he has committed a High Crime. It does not prove he is in fact an “antisocial personality.”  Read the book and you will know why.

So this book will take us to a place where anyone can clearly discern a genuine sociopath for what they are.

Martha Stout has greatly contributed to the work that LRH began — she has identified the SP using criteria that are truly original. Sociopaths (SPs) currently number 4% in the US as I mentioned which puts social personalities at 96%.

No doubt there are professions and positions that attract such personality types. Its not the profession that is the target, it is the individual sociopaths who victimize people.

Among social personalities however there are also several problem personality types who are sources of trouble. These now become far easier to understand because between LRH and Martha Stout you have enough essential stable data that you can avoid confusion.

So all in all, what Martha Stout’s book is and what it means for civilization is truly landmark. This book is a game changer, not just for us, but for the world. I hope others read it. I think if enough Indies read this book, what’s left of DM’s world will crumple in on him.

Marty put this book on his essential reading list. Yes, yes, yes! If everyone in the Church was gotten to read this book, many would spot DM. For those who have left, it is definitely a critical route to closure.

Per LRH, and he was the pioneer on the subject, the handling for the SP is in three stages: detection, routing and handling. Scientologists have been unable to detect the sociopathic personality because they didn't fully understand what it was — the definition was confused. So the handling steps bugged at detection.

With what we know in Scientology about the SP, The Sociopath Next Door is going to complete the job of making you unassailable. Like Scientology itself, it contains a discovery people have been searching for across millennia. It IS the holy grail.

We say in Dianetics that the problem is the reactive mind. Then later LRH discovered the core of the reactive mind was the R6 bank — a super complex pattern of opposed goals and masses implanted eons ago, which is audited out on the Clearing Course or New Era Dianetics. Who was responsible for creating that implant? Sociopaths.

So when I say if you had only one book to read in your lifetime, this might be the most beneficial of them all — I’m not kidding.

I'm so excited to think about what will happen when you read this book. It is going to empower you like nothing else. It is that amazing.

Thoughtful

Dear Steve,

This is a very good article of yours. You dare to think and come up with very practical conclusions. It makes a lot of sense.

Why not go into communication with Martha Stout. Perhaps she would be interested in comparing notes with the writing of LRH and do some scientific reasearch on that subject and come up with some great solutions ?

You know I like to dream !

Hi Roger, actually I already wrote to her through her website. But she has not answered yet. Obviously, I think she is brilliant. Also I might add that apparently there are several more incredible books which she based her work on which Marty also recommends. I will keep you posted!

Hi Steve,
I got my copy a few days ago. I read the first chapter so far and was so blown away by her research methodology and the data, that I've already started to promote it to the rest of the group.

It always bugged the crap out of me that the so-called "white hats" at the top of the org board were immune to scrutiny in the LRH references. Yet, half of the sociopaths I've met in my life (8 that I've isolated) were senior execs in Scn orgs. Making themsleves look like heros by false stats and 3P of others, they scale the ranks and wreak havoc while demanding "ethics protection."

Look at the video on the top of this website. Listen to Debbie Cook tell her horror story with david miscavige. What kind of a moron whould declare miscavige to be the ecclesiastical leader of the scientology religion????
A PTS moron. That's who.

Thanks for the excellent write up Steve.

Hi Les,
Yes, It starts off so powerfully — it seemed almost too good to be true — so I kept waiting for the book to go off the rails... and it NEVER did. It just keeps getting better and better. She is very spiritual and explores the subject from a strong spiritual perspective toward the end. What a human being! — Steve

Strangely, or maybe not so strangely, I did have one person send me an email on back channels. He is someone who always has pushed the idea that Miscavige "isn't the real target" rather he's just a puppet. He dismissed the book as "psychobabble." Made me chuckle.

When I was PES of Los Angeles Foundation Org in the early 80's I had cause to interact with several of the "top brass." They were, to a person, assholes of the highest caliber. Also, their command intention percolated down the org board until all of us were screaming at each other and anger was the "tone that got things done."

# Thoughtful 2012-11-22 21:04
Dan, Thanks for this. Yes, the sociopath(s) implement and exports destructive "policies" that everyone down line is forced to obey. The result is everyone in the entire group starts to act like a sociopath or else they get attacked and destroyed themselves. The whole group takes on the valence of the SP at the top.

Steve, your point is very interesting about being bugged at the detection stage. I decided to leave the church while on the PTS/SP course, but only because of looking at myself and understanding the manifestations of being PTS…not because I could find the actual SP. Being full-time staff I knew I was being exposed to some heavy suppression, but it was not detection that saved me only the certainty I gained that I was PTS and therefore suppression must be present. That data pulled me out of my problems just enough to be able to make a decision. Although watching Miscavige has been sort of a practical assignment on the check sheet of life where PTS/SP tech is concerned, I don’t think we can ever get enough of this type of data. Thanks for the recommendation. I shall take your advice.

Thank you very much, Steve. Great article! Thanks for taking the time and for caring. I just ordered mine from Amazon.com. I did the Ups and Downs Course and the PTS/SP Course. That left me pretty confused about the whole thing and now I know why. Because LRH definitions are confusing and conflicting, such as anybody below 2.0 on the Tone scale or anybody who is seems to be afraid of people or anybody associated with failed projects or anybody who had committed a High Crime, such as, for example, made noise outside the auditing room or blew from Int Base. Looking forward to getting these book and filling in the gaps.

Dear Steve, I just read this wonderful post of yours about spotting and handling SP's, and the book "The Sociopath Next Door" By Marthat Stout. I read this book a month ago and agree with you wholeheartedly that it is the other half of a puzzle and adds to LRH's writings on the subject. Steve, I need to talk to you personally. Do you have an email address or phone number I could have?

I ordered the book on kindle, and I read it this week. I left the COS some time around 1978 because I knew that something about the Church just wasen't right, and his name was David Miscavage. The Sociopath Next Door is a very good book about a very nasty subject. I beleive that if a person reads this book, (s)he will have the mental tools to figure out why @ 90% of the people in scientology leave. And it is much cheeper than the PTS/SP course.

# Thoughtful 2012-10-06 08:10
Yes, Ed your point is a good one, and also it is much cheaper than the destruction created by an SP — draining their finances, putting people into heavy debt, taking their money from the Bridge and putting it into a DM's personal slush fund (the IAS), losing loved ones, etc.

I just ordered on Amazon. I've been reading this blog and Marty's since summer. I am coming to understand many things and feeling more secure about myself and about the reality of scientology. I'm OK with reality, it's a relief to look at actually.
A couple who I know, two staff members for years and years, in Mexico, she is going through an illness very much as multiple sclerosis. She's a clear, C/S, kids auditor, two kids of her own, full of ARC and enthusiasm, no one suspected such a thing. I just know parts of their story, pieces of a puzzle scattered here and there by passing remarks that stayed in my mind over time, as they won't say, always this thing of remaining so discreet. Im so saddened... He says he did everything wrong, He's so bent, I just can't absorb it because I know how he has helped others, gone without enough money at times, tried his best, didn't natter. Its a long story. The only thing I do know is that suppression has been long and hard, but I don't know the exact people. Its been in Mexico and Im not staff.
I will write it all up later and send it in. Maybe it will help others. I sure hope it does.
It's overcast today, it's seems fitting.
Thanx for reading and for the book info.

Steve, thanks so much for recommending this book.q I got it just yesterday and am now well into it. You're right, it does fill in blanks on the PTS/SP. This whole thing about a conscience has bugged me since my Catholic childhood upbringing. It seems a times to be very much present and refined and then at times almost absent and then subject to all shades of grey, all in the same person -talking from personal observation of course! Fascinating!

Great you got the word out. Read the book last year and was blown away too. Had to read a little more on this, so i picked up her guru's(Dr Robert Hare) book "without conscience" another must read. He put together the 20 point Psychopathy checklist the standard for the courts/penal system . Also there is an excellent article by Ben Buehne "Deconstructing myths about psychopaths: what they are like". Highly recommend. So nice that we are getting to the shallow core of that venomous maggot DM.

Some suppressives are hard to spot because they are indeed "clever." They learn how to feign emotions and act appropriatly. The SP characteristics listed in the PTS/SP materials are very helpful. But I have to admit, the thorough research and different viewpoint that Ms. Stout adds to the detection of the real SP/Sociopath adds extremely helpful data for "decent" people to weed out of their lives the "indecent."

I would recommend this book to anyone.

Thanks for the recommendation. It was a great read.

Hi Les, I'm now reading Sharks in Suits, yet another book on the subject. He calls them "psychopaths" however. I'm only in the beginning chapters, which it also seems to be very good and is another Marty recommended book. They are using different terms but describing the same — non conscience, no remorse, no guilt — animal.

I'm thinking it's just not possible to be Over-Educated on the subject.

In Martha's book, I didn't find anything that I would consider False Data or Contrary Facts to what I already understand about sociopaths/SPs. I'll be looking forward to checking out sharks in suits as well.

Steve, My wife bought this book several months ago, and gave a copy to my daughter's boyfriend's mom, who had a def. sociopath in her family. It's a perfect reference for someone who is not associated with Scn.

You mentioned Vicki White from Austin, wow- I knew her well. Heck, I spent 3 months in Austin Org in 1981 on Mission there, I probably ran into you back then. Hope Vicki is OK. Tom White, I wonder too.

Hi Steve, love, love, love this book! Gone are the days of mislabeling people SP's while the real SP escapes discovery. The true sociopath is so inherently dangerous and causes unbelievable damage to lives. This book is a lifesaver and IMO, Scn's appreciate this more than the average person having experienced the destruction of DM. He simply has no conscience and enjoys causing the destruction, there is no remorse. I've used this book to help close friends (non Scn) in dealing with a sociopath on their lines to great results.

Hi Steve,
I also have been trying to read that HCOPL TECH but no luck so far. I'll get with someone who has the later policy volumes.

Finished reading this remarkable book a few days ago and yesterday -after reviewing the 13 points of detection- watched the movie "ARLINGTON ROAD" and indeed it was very helpful to spot the sociopath, especially on the point of him trying to get pity.
The book also delivered other case gain by its education, which was surprising.

Hi Greta, I'm excited that you observed the same thing I did. I haven't heard of the movie, it sounds like one I should watch. I was also amazed about the pity. I have known some people who use that constantly, but I had never clearly spotted them as sociopaths until I read Martha's book. I think it is ironic that the very book that could probably help so many Kool Aid drinkers recover from terminal PTSness was written by a psychologist. It shows the fatal flaw with intolerance and arrogance. The problem was never psychologists OR even psychiatrists. The problem was criminality or even more accurately stated, psychopaths — wherever they live. Any group can have psychopaths in it, just like the CoS does. That doesn't make the "whole group" bad. Man's failure to differentiate the few psychopaths subverting a group to their destructive urges is a key factor that leads to war.

Hello Steve,

thank you so much for suggesting this reading (Martha Stout: The sociopath next door)! I always knew that my ex-wife was trouble but could not correctly identify her as what she is, despite of having done the PTS/SP Course three times. After having read this book I know - she is an SP. And I am more aware of sociopaths in my daily life and protect myself. Concerning Miscavige, I never liked him from the beginning on and for some years I knew that he is an SP. I usually ask Scientologist, what do they perceive if they watch him? One can perceive a lot of power (just like Hitler had it), but theta? The highest emotions he displays are in the 1,0 - 1,5 range (covert hostility, hate, anger), but most of the time he is under zero, very solid.

The book is excellent! It gives the proper mass to PTS/SP technology. It is completely conform with LRH. It is wonderful that "our archfoe" a psychologist wrote a totally sane and true book. Her intention to help is obvious. Thank you again!

Since reading this book, I have also read another great book — "Snakes in Suits." Of course it deals with the same subject matter, but focuses more on the phenomena of the sociopath in positions of power in the corporate world. In this book the authors use the term "psychopath" instead of "sociopath." Apparently the two terms are somewhat interchangeable. Snakes is a GREAT book.

Hello Steve,

I read this Book some months ago after you put this article online.

As you say, this book is complementig the PTS/SP technology in many aspects.

What I mostly liked about her explenations was the chapter about how the society/community around you has a regulating influence on the amount of suppressive elements.
It's true that in a community with a high morale and high values, the feeling of inter-depandance along the dynamics, will hold the suppressive instincts in check.
Also her insight into the value of spirituality itself.

To me, she is not a "psych" at all - she is a researcher of the spirit of man with a strong believe in the good in people.

Sorry, but you do not have the right to post comments.

Shaking Down Scientologists for Cash

How Church Financials Really Work

"It's a lot more viable to chase down millionaires who will donate $10 million for a hand shake, some applause and a metal pin.
